This class will be 6 weekly sessions in that each week I'll be teaching an element of film that is needed to create the final film product. I will go over the role each one, as for example, breaking down a screenplay and how it's used as a blueprint to not only create dialogue, but using stage directions for the actors and how that story in translating on the page visually onscreen. With the lessons, I will also provide film clips as a way of showing how these artisans and filmmakers executed each role and how it comes to life on screen. These clips are a way of not only using them as a tool for visually learning, but also to engage the class and illicit important and interesting conversations throughout the class environment. I will also assigned a film each week for the class to watch outside of class as a way of applying what they have learned in the class into what they are watching.
I think that I'm an ideal candidate to teach this class because not only am I passionate about the subject matter, I also have the background to back it up; I have a MH in Film Studies from Tiffin University as well as a BA in Film Production from Minnesota State University Moorhead. In my undergrad, I was a Film Critic for the campus newspaper where I have earned regional awards for my writing, and I have also worked on short films and a couple of features as a production assistant, editor and director. I want these students to be as passionate about the subject matter as I am but also want these students to learn about the subject matter from different angles, have them looking at filmmaking as tool for not only being entertainment, but to be enlightened and educated in what they are consuming visually.
